I am back – with a surprise makeover

Enjoying some tea on the patio

01 June 2017

Hello my dear friends!

I have really missed talking with all of you. How long has it been? Two-and-a-half years? I don’t quite know where to start, so let’s just start with what happened today.

This morning, Reggie said to me, with a twinkle in her eye, “Flat Kathy, I have planned a little surprise for you. Let’s go into the garden and set up the table on the patio outside.”

We put a colourful tablecloth on the table and some soft cushions on the chairs, and then I sat outside, enjoying the sunshine, while Reggie fetched “a couple of things”.

She came back with some wool, needles and thread, scissors, a ruler, a pencil, some glue, two sheets of bright yellow paper, the remaining strands of my previous hairstyle… and spread them all out on the table.

“What are you doing?” I asked, puzzled.

DING DONG! DING DONG!

The makeover begins!

“That’s the gate! Excuse me, Flat Kathy, I think our visitor has arrived.”

She disappeared for a few moments, and then I heard a familiar voice – it was my friend Glynnis. What a wonderful surprise! You may remember that Glynnis is the photographer and writer for the excellent Pinelands Muse community magazine, which she and her husband put together every month.

She greeted me with a warm hug, “Flat Kathy, it is really good to see you. It’s been far too long.”

We chatted easily for a while, as good friends do, until Reggie returned with a couple of mugs of hot tea. As we sipped our deliciously hot tea, my friends looked at me, appraisingly.

“Flat Kathy,” declared Reggie, “you are looking a bit tatty around the edges. We think it is time for a makeover. The last makeover you had was in April 2013, when we were staying in Windhoek with Aunty Lissi. Remember? And you’ve had a lot of adventures since then. I’ve asked Glynnis to come over and help me, is that okay?”

Glynnis sews on my new mouth

“Of course!” I exclaimed, “I’d love a makeover… but are you going to reuse some of my bits?”

“Yes, I don’t want to change your look too much,” said Reggie, “so I’ll reuse your pretty eyes and the cute button nose that I love so much, and are you happy with your hair, or do you want us to change it? We still have your original hair, if you would like to go back to that?

“No, I much prefer my woolly plaits,” I said, “but do you think you could use those two little ladybugs?”

“Yes, certainly, we can put those into your hair.”

“We’ll redo your mouth, with a little plait,” declared Glynnis, becoming quite creative. “That way it’ll stay in place better, rather than unraveling in pieces.”

I nodded excitedly. “Yes, please, you go right ahead.”

What do you think? I love my new look!
