As predicted, our boat tour of the glaciers and marine animals of Prince William Sound was canceled due to bad weather. We were all disappointed, but high winds, pouring rain and rough seas would have turned my sunny yellow complexion green with seasickness. Paprika and Oregano chalked it up as part of the Alaskan experience. We have another boat tour of the Kenai fjords scheduled for Sunday. Hopefully the weather will improve by then.

Paprika and Oregano decided to take advantage of the rainy day by driving into Anchorage to visit the Anchorage Museum at Rasmuson Centre. This world-class museum displays information about the history and culture of the native people of Alaska, as well as important events in Alaskan history, including one of the largest earthquakes ever recorded, and some works of art. It was a fascinating museum, but the folks there weren’t so happy to see me.

Paprika and Oregano were admiring a totem pole built in the late 19th century. I wanted to pose by the totem pole so Oregano helped me, while being very careful not to touch anything.

Paprika snapped the picture and, a few minutes later, a security guard told them that they were allowed to take pictures, but couldn’t take anymore with me in them. That seemed like a strange and slightly discriminatory rule, but Paprika and Oregano followed it. I was able to enjoy a tour about the native people of Alaska, but wasn’t allowed to take any pictures by the fascinating artifacts.

Once we were outside, we were all happy to see that the rain had stopped. Paprika and Oregano took pictures of me enjoying some of the sculptures in the gardens surrounding the museum.

After we left the museum we went for a walk around the downtown area. Anchorage is a very nice city – not too big or too loud. We enjoyed visiting different shops and watching people.
On the way back to the car, we passed a hot dog cart, but because this is Alaska, the hot dogs are made from reindeer. None of us was adventurous enough to try a reindeer hot dog, so I can’t tell you how it tastes.

Tomorrow we leave Girdwood and drive south to Seward.
Did the guard give you a reason why your picture couldn’t be taken with the art items? Very strange.

Hello Bonnie – I don’t know either. It’s very odd indeed. We all know that Flat Kathy means no harm or disrespect; she’s just really curious and eager to learn everything she can about different countries, cultures and civilisations. I guess they don’t know that she’s a much-loved blog personality and aspiring world traveler?
