Feeding the fishies

“Flat Kathy, you were so helpful earlier today, when you and Richard mixed the cement for the paving,” remarked Aunty Lissi, looking at me proudly. “I was wondering whether you and Reggie might like to feed the fish for me?”

Aunty Lissi has a small fishpond in the front garden, complete with water lilies. Two small fountains make sure that the water circulates and is oxygenated.

It is home to over a dozen small fish – I think they are called ‘Khois’. They range in colour from pale, almost transparent white, to strong vibrant red; most of them have combinations of red and white patterns all over their bodies.

Among them, are also a couple of goldfish, which are my favourites – because their colour most closely resembles mine.

Reggie and I scattered a handful of small fine flakes onto the surface of the water. Instantly, a flurry of hungry fish rose to the surface, their mouths opening and closing, as they seemed to vacuum up the floating flakes. We watched them gliding past, just beneath the surface, their large pale fins fluttering gently. It felt very peaceful, just watching them.
